A participatory methodology for large scale field trials in the UK Organic Eprints
Jones, Dr H.; Hinchsliffe, Miss K.; Clarke, Dr S M; Pearce, Dr B; Gibbon, Dr D; Lyon, Dr F; Harris, Dr F; Thomas, Dr J; Wolfe, Prof M S.
Farmer participation was essential in developing a uniquely useful set of wheat variety trials data on a wide range of organic farms over two years. Although the trials were successful, it became clear that some of the participating farmers felt there were some limitations in the process. These included a lack of ownership in the project and a concern for more researcher help. It was clear that a greater time in-vestment was needed at the start of the project to help with farmer understanding and ownership. De-spite the negative comments, farmers appreciated their involvement, particularly in contrasting their own views and information with that from the wider scene. Farmer participation is essential for systems-level research and this project helped to...

A review of the Organic Conversion Information Service (OCIS) in Wales (1996 – 2001) Organic Eprints
Anon,.
The Organic Conversion Information Service (OCIS) has been operational in Wales since 1996. In 2001 the original funding arrangements for OCIS came to an end and this review was conducted to evaluate the service and canvas farmer opinion to inform the next phase of its development. A questionnaire survey of everyone who had contacted OCIS in its first five years revealed generally high satisfaction with the helpline, information pack and on-farm advisory visits provided by the service. Farmers identified a range of extra features that would be useful, such as more information on marketing, environmental issues and conversion planning.

Zerger, Uli; Weitbrecht, Britta.

Factors Influencing the Extent of Practice of Organic Farming Technologies: A Case Study of Tangail District in Bangladesh Organic Eprints
Sarker, Md. Asaduzzaman; Itohara, Yoshihito.
The study was attempted to explore the major factors influencing the extent of practice of organic farming technologies (called OFTs from here) by the Bangladeshi farmers. The empirical data for the study were collected from the organic farmers of the selected villages of Tangail district in Bangladesh. The results of the study identified four factors like development of knowledge and awareness regarding environmental issues, creation of health awareness, and simplicity of the OFTs and availability of basic production factors as the major influential factors which can increase the extent of practice of OFTs by the farmers. Taking these factors into account the policy makers can formulate a strategy to increase the extent of practice of various OFTs by the...

Research into Practice: Mind the Gap Organic Eprints
Measures, Mr Mark.
The uptake of organic research by commercial producers has been variable due to a number of factors including lack of access to research findings, financial pressures, research priorities, market demands and producer perspectives. Consequently “best organic practice” is not universally applied and apparently intractable problems remain, even though in some cases solutions are available. This paper identifies the role of advisers in supporting organic farmers and the establishment of a system for disseminating the results of research through a number of routes including a web-based archive, advisory leaflets and workshops.
